reading

Last week I read a gripping text entitled "The ups and downs of being bi-polar". (Marie Claire, April 2007)

It features the life story of Alex Fontaine, who has always lived her life to the maximum both professionally and personally. Her first fits of depression came to haunt her when she was 22. The rest of her twenties was spent in a haze of depression and drink.
In her thirties she was experiencing manic episodes followed by low ones on and on. No one knew what was wrong with her as she didn't want to admit to herself that anything was out of the ordinary.
Finally, in 2001, her relief came. She was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder namely with manic depression, which causes unusual shifts in your mood. To learn more about the disease and its symptoms, visit:
Alex Fontaine's next step was to seek help. The time of therapy was-as she puts it "harrowing"-but it helped her learn how to live with her illness.
I was deeply touched while reading this story. My admiration goes to this woman who has achieved so much yet being so ill. I can barely imagine how it must be to cope with such a depression day in day out, but what we should all take from this article is that one shouldn't be ashamed to ask for assistance.
After all, one must realise that you have to combat your demons (whatever their shape might be), preventing them from ruling your life.
