The babes in the wood

Just yesterday I finished reading this outstanding novel. It can only be described as a huge pageturner which brings with it the consciousness that crime is very often not so straightforward.

In my last post I gave you a taste of the plot and now I'll offer you just a bit more of it. After the girl has been found, Inspector Wexford finally manages to track down her brother. Alas, the moment he sees him Wexford knows that the boy cannot possibly be responsible for such a calculated murder.

Who is the murderer then? Does the congregation of the Good Gospels have something to do with the death of the babysitter? Was the babysitter partly responsible for her death?

I can only reveal so much- the ending of the book is unexpected yet satisfying.

Some new vocabulary:

red herring-a fact, idea or subject that takes people's attention away from the central point being considered:

The police investigated many clues, but they were all red herrings.

the worse for wear-tired or in poor condition because of a lot of work or use:

After a month of journeying over rough roads, the drivers and their trucks were looking the worse for wear.

there's no smoke without fire-If unpleasant things are said about someone or something, there is probably a good reason for it:

She says the accusations are not true, but there's no smoke without fire.

give somebody the benefit of the doubt-to believe something good about someone, rather than something bad, when you have the possibility of doing either:
I didn't know whether his story was true or not, but I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt.
