my thoughts about the book

The main reason why I took such a keen interest in the book "A Year in Provence" was the fact that it was worlds apart from "Jaywalking with the Irish".

"A Year in Provence" is the Bible for armchair travellers, gourmets and people who wish to read about the famous French joie de vivre. On top of all that, the book is scant on "complicated" vocabulary and devoid of cultural references which take you ages to find more about.

On the other hand, the book is full of Mayle's witty remarks, his plays with stereotypes, and his poking fun of his countrymen, the British. To make his picture of Provence complete, Mayle introduces also colourful characters, who are all funny in their own way.

All in all, "A Year in Provence" was for me a joy to read , but you shouldn't expect this book to offer you a deep insight into the French culture and countryside as Mayle only scratches the bare surface of both of them in a self-absorbed year.
