reading

This week I read an article in the May issue of Marie Claire about 21st-century relationships where women earn the same or more than their partners or husbands.

Today, 21% of couples in the UK are in a situation similar to the one described above. Gone are the days when men brought home the bacon and women where at home doing all the chores that needed to be dealt with. Nowadays, women and men are on an equal footing in partnerships.

Such a state of affairs isn't, however, all sweetness or light. Because one of five women in the UK today are the main breadwinner, the notion of what a relationship comprises has to change. The relationship of the future should be about co-operation, compromise, and flexibility. The women will need to find a scheme how to give over power in the home, while the men will have to learn to develop pride in helping tu run a successful home.

The way I see it, this 21st-century relationship is a great thing as not so long ago men owned all the income and all the property in a relationship. Today, on the other hand, women and men are leading their relationships as equals. Many men are pleased to have a high-flier girlfriend or wife and women are enamored with men who are all-round partners rather than providers. Still, these 21st-century relationships have a long way to go before they're completely accepted by both the society and the partners themselves. After all, women having heavier wallets than their partners is still uncharted waters.
